Ace at Play

Ace is making friends! Can you believe it? Ace is doing great on his introduction to the pasture (Thanks, Raven!) and is hanging out with his gelding gang! Also, many thanks to Kellie Younger for taking over his Tuesday and Thursday rides!

Whew...

Man, oh man, we were exhausted after the Fall Festival! It was a lot of work but SO much fun. We do have a couple of things going on now (aside from the fact that Ace is doing GREAT!)...

1. Tack for Sale! Take a look at the pictures that are attached and let us know if you'd like a Stubben Dressage Saddle or a Wintec All Purpose to look at.

2. Ace Update - Check out the before and after photos!

3. Christmas Presents - Think about us in your Christmas gifts - do you know someone that has everything but might like a donation made in their name? Let us know and we will make arrangements with you for them to be notified of your gift!
4. Want our newsletter? Let us know and we can sign you up with Constant Contact!

Thank You!

We can't say enough thanks to all the AMAZING volunteers that came out yesterday to help at the Fall Festival! We would have loved to say this sooner, but like you, were were too tired to type! Ace did a great job for his first public demo (lunging) and everyone that came had the chance to leave full of chicken stew, BBQ, cake and pie, with bags full of candy and pictures with their ponies, and dozens of prizes!

Congrats to all of our Raffle and Silent Auction Event Winners! We hope you enjoy your prizes!

Again, to those who helped and those who came out and supported, THANK YOU! We couldn't do it without you, but with your help we raised around $2000 for the rescue!

Ace sailed through his first ride on Friday, with Kellie doing the riding and Lauren doing the leading! No shenanigans from this sweet boy on that day, and we are SO proud of him! Take a look at these photos!

Fall Festival

Ace was gelded this weekend, which he seems to have tolerated remarkably well. He LOVES running around in the indoor ring (and trying to ignore his groundwork training), and it is incredibly rewarding to see him with the energy to do this.

To keep up his support and progress, we're working hard on making our First Annual Fall Festival something to remember! We really want the community involved with us, and it looks like Ace is going to steal the show for sure. We would like to offer many thanks to some of the sponsors that have already offered support for the Fall Festival, including Dewey's Bakery, Rag Apple Lassie Vineyards, Mountainview Medical Associates, and Forsyth Woman Magazine! We have what is shaping up to be an incredible raffle with some really great prizes and loads of fun all around. We can't wait to see you there! Send us a message if you want more information for your school, church, scouting or other group!

Ace

He is doing great and settling in at the main barn. He has been a very polite gentleman with all the other ponies and has been very good with his hand-walking. He seems to be enjoying having all the people and horses walking by! Gelding this weekend, and then he will start his serious groundwork training. Check out the new photos that have been uploaded, donated courtesy of our photographer, Liv!

If you'd like to help us with our next fundraiser (and it is going to be BIG!) please send an email with your availability on October 22nd (prep work) and October 23rd (Fall Festival) to dwinn@hiddenkhorserescue.org.

Ace is Moving! (And more fun things...)

Ace has made some huge strides (and his stride is indeed huge) in recovery. Aside from gaining weight like a champ (especially with his newly-done teeth) and moving around much more energetically on his newly done feet, he's starting to shed out his dry, dull coat and is looking for something to do. You might even say that he is downright bored in quarantine right now. And we all know a bored horse is trouble! Since he is declaring in every way that he is ready to go, he will be moving to the Hidden K Stables barn sometime this week. Shortly upon arrival, he will also be gelded, and then the slow and steady process of conditioning and ground training is going to ramp up for him!

We have some high aspirations for this big guy - hoping we can have him responsive on the ground with lovely manners and see if he will accept a saddle and bridle (no riding yet) in the next 4-6 weeks. If you're out by the barn we do ask that you give him some time before coming to visit, since he will need to transition to yet another place (he has been through a lot) with a lot of new horses and his own gelding. We will let you know when we think he's up for visitors! If you'd like to sponsor his training, please let us know - we would love your help.

On an equally fun note, our next big fundraiser is scheduled for October 23rd at the Hidden K Stables facility! We will be hosting a Fall Festival and Open House. The list of good things is a mile long, and we are having a ton of fun planning it, so we know you'll have a ton of fun if you bring your family out and support our cause (or just wear your Halloween Costume early and maybe get a prize)! We'll be gathering from 2-6 PM, and we will be offering up a Demonstration Show including jumping, cross-country, western, dressage and quadrille riders! On top of that we'll have yummy chicken stew and home-made pies! We're even giggling a little as we come up with the games to play, and it's looking like we're going to have hay rides and a haunted trail! (And if you want to volunteer, please drop us a line!).

So Happy Trails for now, and more updates to come!

Photos of Ace

"Ace" - Our First Rescue!

On Saturday, August 13, 2011, a horse trailer made its way from Bernville, PA to Pfafftown, NC.  Its passenger?  “Ace in the Hole,” aka, “Ace,” a 2-3 year old bay colored American Warm Blood horse about 16.1 hands high.  Ace was originally headed for a very different location, had he not hitched a ride on the trailer headed south.  Literally marked for slaughter, Ace hit the jackpot when he was spotted on-line by Hidden K Stables Rescue & Rehab’s [HKSR&R] Michelle Hargreaves and Lisa Buzzard.

With the honor of being the group’s first rescue horse, Ace is being nursed back to health so that he can be trained and re-homed.  He is currently 300-400 pounds underweight, dehydrated, has worms, bad feet, bad teeth, and an upper respiratory tract infection, but he also has a great temperament, is very sweet and willing, and enjoys being with people.  His gaits are solid and his bones are strong – and all of his known health issues can be overcome with enough love, time and money.

Ace is resting comfortably at an off-site facility while he serves out his mandatory quarantine period, and his initial rehabilitation is expected take several weeks.  Once he is healthy, and has put on enough weight and muscle, he will begin his training so that he can go to a loving home where he will be ridden and well-cared for.

If you want to donate to HKSR&R to help horses like Ace, please go to www.hiddenkhorserescue.org and click on the “donate” button or contact Michelle Hargreaves at 336-403-7131.

Pictures soon!

Our First Class!

The Board of Directors will be meeting tonight! Our first educational offering will be available in the coming weeks! HKSR&R will be offering equine pre-purchase classes free of charge to the public on a bimonthly basis! Our goal is to provide education, allowing future horse owners to make responsible purchase and rescue decisions and to make sure they understand both the care their horses will need and the financial obligations entailed in this.

Mission Statement

Mission Statement of HKS Rescue/Rehab Center Inc.

HKS Rescue and Rehab Center Inc is dedicated and committed to providing rescue service to horses that are found to be in need of healthcare, nutrition, and rehabilitation. HKS Rescue and Rehab Center Inc. is also committed to educating the public, especially the youth, about the responsibilities of horse management and care. HKSR&R strongly believes that education will prevent negligence and decrease the need for rescue. We want to change the lives and welfare of horses through education and rehabilitation.

Action Points:
*Rehabilitate and Retrain Horses so that they can find their place and job in the equestrian world;
*Supply after care and training services to those who adopt horses from the Rescue Center in order to decrease the likelihood that they will return to a rescue state or center;
*Build an Education Center non affiliated with any one organisation in order to increase the availability of education;
*Provide Education to the general public at an accessible Education Center;
*Make available education and opportunities to learn about horse management to the middle and high school students, especially students that may not be privileged enough to have vast opportunities.
